What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?

A plain explanation of AEO, how it differs from SEO and GEO, and what actually changes in your work when answers replace links.

Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is the practice of making your content the source a system chooses when it answers a question directly instead of returning a list of links. That covers Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Bing Copilot, and voice assistants, all of which resolve a question and name a few sources rather than handing back ten blue links. The shift it responds to is small to describe and large in consequence: search used to send a visitor to your page to find the answer, and increasingly it reads your page, extracts the answer, and presents it in place. AEO is what you do about that. In practice it means writing self-contained answers, making them machine-readable, and giving engines consistent reasons to trust your brand as a source.

AEO, GEO, and SEO are not three separate jobs

The vocabulary has multiplied faster than the discipline. AEO usually refers to being the chosen answer, generative engine optimization (GEO) usually refers to being cited inside content a model generates, and SEO refers to ranking in a results page. In day-to-day practice the overlap is close to total: all three depend on a page an engine can reach, an answer it can extract, and a brand it can verify. Anyone selling you AEO as a separate product line with a separate budget is selling you the same underlying work twice. The useful distinction is not which acronym you buy, it is which surfaces you check whether you appear on.

What actually changes in the work

Three things change. First, page structure matters more than page length, because a passage has to survive being lifted out and read alone. Second, entity clarity matters more than keyword density, because an engine has to be confident about who you are before it will put your name in an answer it is accountable for. Third, measurement changes, because a citation is not a ranking and your rank tracker will not show it. What does not change is the foundation. Crawlable pages, honest content, consistent facts, and genuine expertise were the right answer before, and answer engines have made them less optional rather than more.

The parts worth doing first

Start by confirming the engines can reach you, because everything else is wasted otherwise. Then take the ten questions that matter most commercially and make sure a page exists that answers each one directly, near the top, in language that stands alone. Add structured data so a machine can parse what the page is about, keep your brand facts identical everywhere they appear, and earn mentions on sources these models already trust. That last one is slow and it is the reason most competitors never get there.

How to tell whether it is working

Ask the engines. Run your buyer questions through ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google monthly, in the words a buyer would use, and write down who gets named. Presence in those answers is the metric, and it moves on its own timeline, independent of your positions. Traffic will tell you less than it used to, because an answer engine that resolves the question sends no click even when it cited you, and brand searches and direct enquiries often move before sessions do.

The short version

AEO is not a new profession, it is search optimisation for a search box that answers instead of listing. Be reachable, be quotable, be verifiable, and check the surfaces where your buyers now ask their questions. If you want to see how the answer engines describe your brand today, and which competitors they name instead, our free AI visibility report covers exactly that.
