How to get your brand cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity

ChatGPT and Perplexity quote sources, they do not rank links. Five practical steps to become the source AI engines cite in your category.

Most brands try to rank for AI search. That is the wrong verb. ChatGPT and Perplexity do not rank pages in a list, they read a few sources and quote them inside a written answer. You get cited by being the clearest, most verifiable source on the exact question a buyer asked, on a page the engine can actually reach. Here is how to earn that.

Make sure the engine can reach your page

Before an engine can quote you, it has to fetch you. A surprising number of sites block the AI crawlers by accident, so start there. Check that GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot are allowed in your robots file, and that your key content is in the HTML, not painted on afterwards by JavaScript the crawler never runs. If your best answer lives inside an image or a script-rendered widget, the model cannot read it, and a page it cannot read is a page it cannot cite.

Write the sentence you want quoted

An engine writing a two-sentence answer reaches for the source that already wrote those two sentences. So lead each section with the answer, then the evidence, not the other way around. Name the thing inside the sentence, the service, the metric, the product, never a bare “it” that loses meaning the moment the passage is lifted out of the page. Short claim, specific fact, move on. Pages that bury the answer under a long warm-up get read and skipped.

Be a brand the engines actually recognize

Models cite entities they are confident about. That confidence comes from consistency: the same facts about your brand, your name, what you do, where you operate, repeated everywhere you appear, and marked up so a machine can parse them. Structured data on your pages and a clean, consistent presence across the web tell the engine you are a real, distinct entity in your category, not a name it is unsure how to place. Inconsistent facts do the opposite, they make you a risky citation the model would rather avoid.

Earn the mentions the models lean on

Being correct on your own site is not enough. When an engine decides who to name, it leans on what the wider web says about you: reviews, mentions, and coverage on the sources those models already trust. A page that says you are the best counts for little. An independent source that describes what you do, in plain terms, counts for a lot. This is the slow part, and it is also the part competitors ignore, which is exactly why it works.

Test it the way the engines do

You do not have to guess whether any of this is landing. Open ChatGPT and Perplexity and ask them the questions your buyers actually ask, in the words your buyers use, and write down who gets named. That list is your real competitive set, and it is often not the one you assumed. Re-run the same questions a month later and watch the names change as your work compounds. If you are never in the answer, you now know exactly which questions to go win.

The short version

None of this is a trick. It is the old discipline of being the clearest, most credible source, now read by a machine that quotes instead of links. Fix what the engine cannot reach, write the sentences you want lifted, and give the wider web consistent reasons to trust you. Do that on the handful of questions that matter most to your buyers, and the citations follow.
